We are accustomed to perceiving growth in a linear fashion. The continual bumps, cul de saqs, and zigzags of life on the road can teach us this one thing about spiritual formation: it is non-linear. Let me elaborate. The spiritual growth of the pilgrim is most often experienced as haphazard and aimless. This is because the pilgrim is walking a twofold path simultaneously, one seen and the other unseen. The unseen path directs the seen one. The unseen path is the path of positive spiritual formation. The unseen path sometimes makes the path you see yourself walking seem pretty messed up.
