The Asceticism of Travel

Travel is a form of asceticism, a way of surrendering to reduced circumstances in a manner that enhances the whole person. It is a radical way of knowing exactly who, what, and where you are, in defiance of those powerful forces in society that aim to make us forget. - Kathleen Norris

Travel will not automatically make anybody a better person. In some ways you might even end up being worse than before you left (ever listened to someone brag about their travels?). But travel can, like any form of asceticism well practiced, make room for the Spirit to work on the heart, mind, body and soul of a person. Therein lies the transformative potential of travel.
